Filing Fees
Even though a DIY-divorce is the cheapest option possible, it is not free. In any divorce case, regardless of the method chosen, when the plaintiff files for divorce with the court, he or she has to pay a court filing fee. In Illinois, the court filing fee is about $289. However, this amount may vary slightly from county to county.
The fee is mandatory except when the plaintiff cannot afford to pay. In such a case, he or she can ask the court to waive the fee by completing the Application for Waiver of Court Fees and proving the inability to pay.
